Ron was passionate about history and was especially interested in the American Revolution, Native Americans and local history.

In 1995, with no organization dedicated to preserving the history of Middleburg Heights, Ron created the SWAMP Co. SWAMP is an acronym for Sons, Wives, Ancestors for Middleburgh's Preservation Coalition, but also a reference to the swampland that once surrounded Lake Abram. Early white settlers in the area found the swamp to be perfect for growing onions, and, in fact, Middleburgh Township was once known as the onion capital of the world. Today, the city's emblem features an onion.
